Madrid. July 26. 80 experts in research and health care in the field of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative conditions will meet in Lisbon at the Global Summit Alzheimer's Research & Care Lisbon 2017, which will be held at the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown. The meeting will be presided by Her Majesty the Queen Sofia of Spain, president of the foundation which bears her name and celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and by Leonor Beleza, president of the Champalimaud Foundation and former Minister of Health of Portugal.
The summit aims to provide a forum for sharing recent progress in the two distinct but complementary areas of therapeutic intervention and research on neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s and Parkinson’s. Each chapter have a program of lectures and presentations within a translational, integrated perspective of research and care. The global dementia crisis affects more than 50 million people in the world, increasingly in low and middle-income countries.
Together with the Champalimaud Foundation and the Queen Sofía Foundation, the Spanish CIEN Foundation (Centre for Research in Neurological Diseases), the CRE Alzheimer (State Reference Centre for the Care of Persons with Alzheimer’s Disease and other Dementias, of the Ministry of Health, Social Services, and Equality of Spain), and CIBERNED (Network Centre for Biomedical Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases) cooperate in the organization of the meeting.
Renowned scientists such as Richard Axel and John O'Keefe, who were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2004 and 2014, will deliver lectures on neurology and genome (Axel) and brain networks essential for building memories (O'Keefe). Rui Costa, expert in the neurobiology of actions and movement, and the neurologist António Damásio, Prince of Asturias Award for Research 2005 and author of The Feeling of What Happens: Body and Emotion in the Making of Consciousness, will also participate.
As for the experts in therapeutic intervention, Mercè Boada, founder and medical director of the ACE Foundation in Barcelona and a specialist in early diagnosis of AD, and Pablo Martínez Lage, director of neurology at the CITA Foundation, have confirmed their participation. Takanori Shibata, an expert in artificial intelligence applied to the treatment of neurodegenerative conditions, and Vladimir Hachinski, a professor at the University of Western Ontario and one of the world's leading authorities in dementias, will deliver master lectures.
The summit will stage the close ties of collaboration between institutions and scientists of the two countries, and aims to promote a joint European policy for research and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, a problem of costly economic and social consequences in countries with aging populations.
